Ancient Bharat possessed one of the world’s richest and longest-lasting traditions of organised learning. Knowledge was transmitted through gurukulas, āśramas, temples, monasteries, agrahāras, scholarly assemblies, royal courts and enormous residential mahāvihāras. These institutions were not identical to modern universities, yet several developed sophisticated systems of residential education, teachers, libraries, debate, admission, patronage and international scholarship.

The intellectual world of Bharat included Vedic and wider Sanatan traditions, together with Buddhist and Jain schools that developed within the same civilisational landscape. Sanskrit functioned as one of the major languages of advanced scholarship, alongside Pāli, Prākrits and numerous regional languages.

1. The Guru–Śiṣya Paramparā

Long before enormous residential institutions appeared, one of Bharat’s fundamental educational structures was the guru–śiṣya paramparā—the transmission of knowledge from teacher to student.

Education was regarded as more than the acquisition of information.

The student was trained in:

  • memory;
  • reasoning;
  • discipline;
  • language;
  • interpretation;
  • debate;
  • ethical conduct;
  • practical skills;
  • specialised śāstras.

The teacher was not simply a lecturer. The guru could supervise the student’s intellectual and personal formation over a prolonged period.

The Government of India’s Ministry of Culture describes oral tradition and guru–śiṣya transmission as important mechanisms through which ancient Indian knowledge survived even when physical educational institutions disappeared.


2. Gurukulas and Āśramas

The gurukula was one of the characteristic educational forms of ancient India.

Students could reside near or within the household or āśrama of the teacher and study directly under that teacher.

One of the oldest and most famous centres of advanced learning associated with Ancient Bharat was Takṣaśilā, known today as Taxila.

It lies in modern Pakistan, northwest of present-day Islamabad.

The city stood near major routes linking the Indian subcontinent with:

Its geographical position made it both a commercial crossroads and an intellectual meeting place.

Takṣaśilā differed substantially from later Nālandā.

Medicine required knowledge of:

The most famous institutional centre of learning in Ancient Bharat was Nālandā Mahāvihāra, in present-day Bihar.

16. Xuanzang and Nālandā

One of the most celebrated international scholars associated with Nālandā was the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang, who travelled across India during the seventh century.

He studied with major Indian scholars and spent an extended period at Nālandā.

His travels became enormously important because he carried knowledge from India to China and subsequently participated in large translation projects.

Another major Chinese traveller, Yijing, journeyed through the Indian intellectual world during the seventh century.

His accounts preserve valuable information about:

  • Sanskrit study;

  • international students.

Yijing’s experiences demonstrate that learning Sanskrit was essential for many foreign scholars who wished to study Indian texts accurately.

19. Nālandā’s Manuscript Culture

An institution sustaining hundreds of years of scholarship required an enormous textual infrastructure.

Students needed works for study.

Teachers required commentaries.

Scholars produced new works.

Texts were copied repeatedly.

Foreign visitors sought manuscripts to carry home and translate.

Nālandā therefore became closely associated with one of the most famous library traditions of the ancient world.

Nālandā did not merely teach later institutions intellectually.

Its physical organisational model influenced the development of other mahāvihāras.

UNESCO identifies Nālandā’s planning, architecture and institutional organisation as influential upon later centres throughout the Indian subcontinent and wider South and Southeast Asia.

The model included:

quadrangular monasteries

cells surrounding courtyards

temples and stupas

formal scholarly organisation

international intellectual networks.


21. Vallabhī — Western Bharat’s Great Centre of Learning

Far to the west, in modern Gujarat, Vallabhī emerged as another celebrated intellectual centre.

It served as the capital of the Maitraka dynasty, which ruled much of Saurashtra between approximately the fifth and eighth centuries CE.

The city also benefited from Gujarat’s commercial networks.

Thus Vallabhī joined:

Historical scholarship identifies Vallabhī as an important Buddhist and commercial centre, while records of Chinese travellers compared its intellectual importance with Nālandā.

Vallabhī became especially associated with Buddhist learning but supported a wider curriculum.

Educational traditions connected with the city included subjects such as:

Several centuries after Nālandā had become established, another enormous intellectual institution arose in Bihar:

Vikramaśilā

It developed under the Pāla dynasty, particularly from around the eighth century onward.

The Pāla rulers became major patrons of education, monasteries, art and scholarship across eastern Bharat.

Vikramaśilā formed part of a connected eastern Indian scholarly network that also included:

  • Nālandā;
  • Odantapurī;
  • Somapura;
  • Jagaddala.

Modern Oxford scholarship describes these mahāvihāras as part of the major network of Buddhist monastic institutions patronised across eastern India between approximately 600 and 1300 CE.


24. The Archaeological Remains of Vikramaśilā

The ruins at Antichak in Bihar reveal an enormous brick monastic complex.

Its surviving features include:

  • a monumental central structure;
  • monastic cells;
  • courtyards;
  • gateways;
  • brick architecture;
  • terracotta decoration.

The scale of the remains demonstrates that Vikramaśilā was not an isolated monastery inhabited by a handful of monks.

25. The Dvāra-Paṇḍitas

Traditions concerning Vikramaśilā describe an interesting academic system involving distinguished scholars known as dvāra-paṇḍitas—learned gate scholars.

The symbolism was significant.

A student entering a major knowledge institution was not merely entering a building.

The student was entering a world in which knowledge itself had to be tested.

Vikramaśilā therefore became famous for intellectual rigour, philosophical debate and advanced scholarship.


26. Atiśa and the International Influence of Vikramaśilā

One of Vikramaśilā’s most celebrated scholars was Atiśa Dīpaṃkara Śrījñāna.

Atiśa travelled from India to Tibet during the eleventh century and became enormously influential there.

His career illustrates the same pattern already visible at Nālandā:

Historical sources associate its foundation with the early Pāla rulers, particularly Gopāla, around the eighth century.

Its precise archaeological identification remains less secure than that of Nālandā or Vikramaśilā, although the leading historical identification places it around present-day Bihar Sharif.

Recent archaeological research describes Odantapurī as an important eighth-century centre forming part of the eastern Indian mahāvihāra network with Nālandā, Vikramaśilā, Somapura and Jagaddala.

This demonstrates that eastern Bharat possessed something larger than isolated universities.

It possessed an interconnected scholarly ecosystem.


28. Somapura Mahāvihāra

Another extraordinary institution survives at Paharpur in present-day Bangladesh.

Known as Somapura Mahāvihāra, it became one of the great educational and religious establishments of the Pāla age.

Its enormous plan contains a vast quadrangular monastery surrounding a monumental central structure.

Somapura was significant not only intellectually but architecturally.

UNESCO states that its architectural form influenced religious architecture as far away as:

The later Pāla intellectual network also included Jagaddala Mahāvihāra, associated with northern Bengal.

Like the other great mahāvihāras, Jagaddala became important for Buddhist scholarship and the Sanskrit–Tibetan transmission of texts.

Ancient and medieval Bharat produced an enormous manuscript culture.

Long before printing became widespread, every copy of a text had to be written by hand.
